A brief history lesson!

GMIT has been EV-aware for a number of years now. In 2012 a trial project was lead by Dr. Thomas Roche. As a result of this project, an eCars charging point was installed on the Dublin Road campus. This subsequently lay idle between 2012 and November 2017, when I became the first staff member to own and drive an EV on a daily basis.

To read more about the initial pilot project from 2012, have a look at this page.

  2. Well, I can't say for sure who was and wasn't aware of EVs in GMIT before 2012, but that seems to have been the starting point for broader awareness. There are examples of EVs that pre-date 2012, but arguably they only began to get a bit of traction in public when the ESB set up their eCars division in 2010 and Nissan launched the LEAF in 2011. I think in that context, GMIT was relatively early to the game by having a research project in 2012.
